It’s ridiculous to pay $78 for a bowl of noodles, even in Hong Kong. But Xia Mian Guan is almost an exception – it’s a hell of a bowl of noodles (and, besides, everything is a little overpriced in Elements). Xia Mian Guan is actually a popular, humble noodle shop in Shanghai, but their Hong Kong debut is a complete makeover with elaborate Chinese window frames and lots of painted glass. Their signature dishes – the noodles with fish in soup and noodles with crab roe and shrimp – are aromatic and full of flavor. And their cold dishes, such as the kidney slices with sesame dressing and fried fish in yellow wine, are as authentic as you can get. But the big disappointment was the xiao lun bao they forgot to bring us, though they did make an impressive effort to get it to us once they realized it was missing, scrambling all the staffers to full alert. But too little, too late for the amount of coin we had to drop on this place.
