Whisk
Considering that Whisk is located in the utterly design-conscious Mira hotel, we were rather disappointed by the underwhelming and rather gloomy décor of Singaporean celebrity chef Justin Quek’s first foray into the Hong Kong dining scene. Open tables laid out in rows gave a rather exposed, canteen-like feel, and who decided that the spectacular glass bauble chandelier should be out of eyeshot for 90 percent of the tables? On a positive note, the food itself has to work much harder to impress, and for the most part it actually does. Aching to try the restaurant’s signature dishes, we plumped for a five-course tasting dinner. We loved the perfectly crisp prawn tempura with a rich tomato consommé, and the wonderfully fluffy Grand Marnier soufflé, paired with a delicious dessert wine. The mains—Quek’s signature pork belly—might not be to everyone’s taste, unctuously fatty as it is, but served in a delicate portion and accompanied by a superbly seared US sirloin, it’s certainly worth a taste. All in all, we paid $690 a head for a five-course meal with four wines, plus tea and coffee—a great deal for excellent food. If you’re willing to overlook the lackluster décor, that is.
