Whether vegetarianism can enhance one's beauty and health is still up for debate, but it is definitely true that having a vegetarian meal every now and then instead of your usual meat-heavy, fat-laden food is beneficial to your well being. This restaurant shares a giant street-level entrance with two other restaurants that you couldn't possibly miss while walking along Canton Road. The décor is fairly simple, with some plastic bamboo "growing" along the cream-colored walls, making the place look pretty much like any ordinary Chinese restaurant. With our stomachs screaming to be filled, we followed our welcoming waiter's advice and ordered the "bird's nest beauty" set menu for two ($388, discounted to $218). The set started with braised "shark fin" soup, which was actually made from yams. The faux shark fin looked a lot like the real thing, but it wasn't as firm. However, it still tasted pretty good. The mains—sautéed "cod" fillets (made from soybeans) with shaved mushrooms, braised chestnuts and "chicken" (also made from soybeans)—had us puzzled. There weren't any mushrooms in the fish dish, but plenty of them in the chicken dish. And while the chicken neither looked nor tasted anything like real chicken, we still enjoyed the dish tremendously with its flavor-packed mushrooms and chestnuts presented in a clay pot. On the other hand, the fish actually looked like the real thing, and even had a similar texture, but one bite and you'd know it was made from soy. We didn't care, though, because the dish tasted good and we cleaned up the plate. Braised e-fu noodles with enoki mushrooms and pea shoots in abalone sauce followed and were also well done, while our dessert of double-boiled bird's nest soup with almond juice was a light, sweet ending.
