Do-It-Yourself okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza) joints—they’re all over Japan, and naturally, we love the young entrepreneurial minds that have brought them to Hong Kong. The concept’s great, the food’s simple and fantastic fun. We made excellent pancakes on the hotplate, decorated with smiley face mayo and bonito flake facial hair. But the kitchen should be a whole lot quicker bringing out the batter and ingredients; remember, it still takes a while to cook. Bigger bowls might help too, because mixing the ingredients properly into the batter in that tiny little bowl was a major chore and bore. The other dishes are also not quite up to par (the dressing for the salmon and the spinach in the aluminum wrap were way too salty). Still, it is one of the only cook-it-your-own okonomiyaki places in town, and it’s coming out with a new menu with new items this week, so, hopefully, there will be much improvement soon.
