The ultimate test for credibility at any Indian restaurant is simple: Do you see any Indian patrons dining inside? At Woodlands, we’d say that the Indian clientele makes up about 80 percent of the diners. This low-key joint tucked away on the second floor of Wing On plaza serves hearty, homey south Indian vegetarian fare at extremely affordable prices. The menu is pretty extensive and can be quite confusing, especially if it’s your first time, so here’s what we’d recommend. Get a couple of dishes to share, such as the sev-puri (small rice crackers loaded with spiced potatoes, onions and chutney) and the idli-sambar (steamed rice cake served with dhal and coconut chutney). Then, order a thali (a selection of different dishes in small tin bowls on a tray with rice and a chapatti). Dishes typically come with different types of dal, assorted vegetable dishes and one sweet milk-based dessert—all of which are refillable upon request. Saving the best for last, do not leave Woodlands without ordering one of their famous dosas, a giant crispy crepe made from rice and black lentils. Our favorite is the Mysore masala dosa, which comes stuffed with spiced potatoes.
