When Hip Sushi first opened in Causeway Bay in '07, it was full of promise—this new conveyor belt sushi restaurant had hired Masao Yamazaki, one of the best sushi chefs in Japan, to be their chief consultant on the menu, chef training and even the décor. And with so many successful kaiten-sushi places in Hong Kong already, one tends to have high hopes for any place that still wishes to tap into the market. But sadly, Hip Sushi failed miserably. Located in the recently refurbished New Town Plaza, this outlet in Sha Tin is admittedly a much more spacious and comfortable than its Causeway Bay original, but that’s pretty much the only good thing we can say about it. Most of the sushi was bland, overpriced and definitely not jet-fresh. Particularly appalling were the seared foie gras and egg sushi, which both came to our table cold. The service was poor too—they forgot some of our orders (we overheard that it happened to several other customers too) and the chefs all look and act like they’re working in the seventh circle of sushi hell.
