Maybe it’s just us, but we don’t typically associate quality cuisine with a place that has “Lan Kwai Fong” in its title. But this assumption couldn’t be more wrong when it comes to Celebrity Cuisine, a fancy diner located in the somewhat oddly named Lan Kwai Fong Hotel (for one, because it’s not actually in LKF).
Walk through the entrance, and you’ll see photos of local celebrities—including politicians like Henry Tang and CE-elect CY Leung—displayed in an album on a side table. Inside is an intimate space with purple walls and white-clothed tables. During lunch, dim sum is available, as is the regular a la carte menu. Our table ordered a mishmash of things and was very impressed by the quality of most of the dishes. We enjoyed our giant translucent-skinned har gow, deep-fried tofu with fish paste and silky smooth steamed egg with crab meat and veggies. The slightly over-fried turnip cake and shredded beef fried noodles, on the other hand, were pretty average.
What made us give the restaurant three stars, as opposed to four, was the price. What we had wasn’t bank-breaking (although it could’ve been if we had chosen more luxurious dishes), but for what we paid we should’ve gotten all “mmmm” and no “meh.” Alas, this was not the case. On a brighter note, the staff is quite friendly and helpful, and we can definitely see ourselves coming back for more.
