New Year's Eve Dining in Hong Kong

Binge your way through the end of the year at one of these restaurants.

It’s the final day of 2012 and there are less than 24 hours before a whole new year begins—assuming Doomsday hasn’t gotten us all already. What to do before the inevitable countdown? Eat up, of course. We’ve drawn out a full day’s itinerary of feasts and celebratory treats, starting with brunch and ending with a decadent multi-course dinner.

An Early Start

Start the last day of the year with a tummy-warming brunch.

Start the last day of the year with a Hong Kong staple: dim sum. Loong Yuen Cantonese Restaurant (Holiday Inn Golden Mile Hong Kong, 50 Nathan Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2315-1006) is offering an extremely generous all-you-can-eat dim sum brunch menu on New Year’s Eve, priced at $268 for adults and $138 for kids and seniors. Treat yourself to a steamer of fresh jumbo shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings and baked barbeque pork puffs—but if it’s more than just dim sum you’re itching for, then also save room for their succulent crispy pork dish.

For brunch with more western flair, The Parlour (Hullett House, 1881 Heritage, 2A Canton Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 3988-0101) also has a sweet New Year’s Eve deal, with a menu priced at $638 per guest. Take your pick of shucked oysters, traditional salads, smoked salmon and an array of fresh cold cuts before diving into mains of Australian sole, lamb chops and risotto. A dessert table is also at the ready.

If you haven’t gone too overboard in the morning, we suggest you make a trek over to the InterContinental nearby. The hotel’s Steakhouse Wine Bar and Grill (18 Salisbury Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2313-2323) is open for holiday lunch, and it’s an absolute must. The New Year’s Eve lunch menu, at $498 per head, is inclusive of a go at the salad bar and a choice of grilled meat such as rib-eye, sirloin, filet mignon or lamb chops, or a fillet of seabass or king prawns, all cooked to order.


Midday Break

Take a year-end breather with some cakes and snacks between your proper meals.

Carry on with nibbles and dainty drinks at Café 103 or The Lounge & Bar at the Ritz-Carlton (102/F-103/F, International Commerce Centre, 1 Austin Rd. West, West Kowloon, 2263-2270). The festive tea set that’s available from 3pm to 5pm at both venues features sweets such as berry trifle, black and white pecan cake, and warm strawberry and sour cherry crumble. Enjoy alongside a cup of freshly brewed Earl Grey or a steaming coffee. The tea sets are $328 per guest.


End with a Bang

Let loose and indulge in a multi-course feast before the final countdown to 2013.

The final dinner of the year awaits at Sushi Ta-ke (12/F, Cubus, 1 Hoi Ping Rd., Causeway Bay, 2577-0611). The $1,880 eight-course Japanese New Year’s Eve dinner includes marinated radish and sea urchin with caviar appetizers, tuna sashimi and simmered lobster and Japanese wagyu beef for mains, and strawberry mochis for dessert.

Alternatively, View 62 (Hopewell Centre, 183 Queen’s Rd. East, 2574-6262) on the 62nd floor of Hopewell Centre, is offering a decoratively presented, bespoke evening set menu. At $1,500 per guest, ring in the new year in style with a festive cocktail made of mandarin, cinnamon and roses, followed by appetizers of cockle sphere, salmon roe tempura and oysters in tartar sauce (just to name a few). Their meticulously prepared main courses include blue lobster with Thai sauce, and wagyu sirloin coupled with potato truffle. To top it all off, the restaurant finishes with a dessert menu of spicy chocolate with ginger mousse and coconut crumbs. Bonus: the Chris Polanco and Azucar Latina Band will provide live entertainment until 9pm.

Last but not least, you can tuck into a specially prepared French/Japanese-y six-course $780 set menu at Tate Dining Room & Bar (59 Elgin St., Central, 2555-2172). Tuck into a variety of dishes like onion panna cotta, foie gras ice cream, Maine lobster rice, cauliflower oyster veloute and Iberico pork with potato gratin.
