This coffee and dessert bar is located in a grand and sparse space near the top of Langham Place. Honestly, we were expecting something more local and colorful in a district like Mong Kok, and were surprised by the generous gaps between each table and the understated colors of the whole interior. Lots of white, and lots of light, bright furniture.
The specialties at 100 Bites are coffees and cakes, but there are also fancy cold drinks, macarons, hot desserts like soufflés and crepes, and many other pastries on offer. The sweets are all displayed in a glass case by the purchase counter, and we spent a good few minutes eyeing each one up and down before deciding on a pastel-colored strawberry meringue and a mango-based filo pastry.
The soufflés also looked tempting, although we didn’t want to have to wait 20 minutes for the thing. We ordered coffees on the side, which came in cute house-branded mugs and were dark, strong and with a swirling swath of healthy crema at the top. If we were more curious that night, we would’ve endeavored to find out more about the beans—but really, we were here for the desserts.
Our strawberry meringue, we felt, was a bit of false advertising: basically, the cake was a regular mousse and sponge combo, surrounded by a layer of sugary white chocolate. The only signs of meringue were the Hershey Kisses-like pastel bits on top. It was still tasty, but we were hoping for more crunch and more egg white. And that white chocolate coating didn’t do anybody any good. The mango pastry was flaky and mango-y enough to keep us in a happy mood.
All in all, 100 Bites might not exactly be Cordon Bleu material, but they do try and we can’t really complain.
