The Dining Room is the Shanghai Min group’s posh and modern interpretation of Shanghainese fare, and it hits all the right notes. The CWB venue follows in the footsteps of the debut branch in Kowloon Bay.
With a gorgeous high-ceilinged space, light sylvan furniture and not an Asian design element in sight (save for the tableware), you might as well be at a casual-cool bistro rather than a Chinese resto. Seriously, you’d expect a cheese platter and a cup of coffee instead of a steamer full of xiaolongbao here.
The menu is comprehensive and reasonably priced, with most dishes hovering around the $50 to $70 mark. We started with a sharp, thick and ingredient-rich spicy and sour soup before diving into a bowl of bang-on Shanghainese noodles with deep-fried pork cutlets in clear broth. The xialongbao were full of soupy goodness, the scallion cake glorious in their sesame-covered shells.
Every dish was a knockout and we ended up over-ordering and doggy-bagging the rest home. Service was attentive but not overbearing on the whole, and we left as very happy patrons. Too bad we didn’t save any room for dessert.
