The buzz: Under the H&M Group and known to some as H&M’s sleeker older sister, COS (short for Collection Of Style) recently opened at a two-story location on Queen’s Road Central, after months of chatter and anticipation on fashion blogs throughout the city.

The goods: Nothing at all like H&M’s casual threads, COS does classic pieces with a futuristic flourish—practical for the office, yet sophisticated enough to turn some heads on your way to work. Their autumn/winter 2012 collection, for instance, favors daring, fashion-forward colors (bright mint green, mustard yellow and fuchsia) along with more neutral, earthy tones, and combines heavy, textured wool with sharp lines and deep V-necks. For the quality of the pieces, you’re looking at pretty good value. Dresses generally hover at the $800 mark, and tops go for less than $500. Clothing for both men and women are available; minimalist, silver-accented accessories are available, too.

The décor: As sleek and minimalist as its designs, COS features white, white and more white, with lots of steel and glass and the odd brightly colored piece of furniture thrown in to jazz the place up. Large swaths of empty space means leisurely browsing through the racks without the stress of a huge crowd of shoppers bearing down on you.
