W52
W52
October 9th, 2009The buzz: This new addition to Wyndham Street has an impressive repertoire of contemporary Italian dishes, along with what is arguably one of the coolest elevators in the city.
The décor: W52 combines style and practicality in one neat package. Plenty of natural light seeps into the ground level bar area, which, coupled with the comfortable high bar stools, makes for a great spot for a quick, casual bite. The first and second level dining rooms both boast a private seating area, and a two-person outdoor terrace with a fantastic view of the busy street below.
The food: Executive chef Ernesto Tonnetto (of former Va Bene fame) hones in on the concept of pure and simple dining. Italian dishes are concocted from a small number of fresh, complimentary ingredients to let the natural flavors shine. Recommended antipasti include the beef carpaccio of hand carved tenderloin. Classic pastas are available on request but chef Ernesto also has a long list of must-try innovative creations, such as the sea bass tortellini with dry martini, tomatoes and the surprise ingredient of caramelized orange peel.
The drinks: With an elevator specially designed to show off their impressive wine cabinet collection, there’s no doubt that W52 is serious about their drinks. The restaurant carries mostly Italian wines and offers over ten different bottles by the glass. There’s also an extensive list of creative mixed drinks, including the Fig Pirinha (Cachaça, fig purée, brown sugar and lime).
Why you’ll be back: Come back for lunch—there’s always an antipasti buffet, along with several different set lunch menus. And for a quick bite, the bar can whip up a panini or hearty salad in a flash.
