February 20th, 2009The buzz: Kenneth Howe of South Bay Beach Club notoriety has opened a ritzy, retro cocktail lounge celebrating the subtly surreal art of the iconic 50s American pin-up.
The décor: Maximalist, yet intimate with cozy sofas and chaise lounges. Downstairs is French boudoir à la Chinoiserie, upstairs is swanky Vegas bachelor pad. Iconic American artist Gil Elvgren’s gorgeous pin-up girls titillate from every angle and surface, on the menu and the walls, which are also painted in a striking shade of teal.
The music: Old-school lounge without being too loud or tacky: ragged jazz, 50s crooners, exotic mambo.
The drinks: Fresh fruit martinis and all the classic aperitifs, but do go for their innovative boutique cocktails, such as the Green Fairy (absinthe and pineapple juice), Poultry Puss (whisky, muddled strawberries, ginger and brown sugar), and our favorite, Tokyo Drift (sake, vodka, fresh basil and mango juice). Try out the drinks with balsamic vinegar, all the rage in LA right now.
The crowd: Bohemians who want a tête-à-tête over cocktails and crooners.
Why you’ll be back: Who would want to pay that ridiculous membership fee at Feather Boa anyway? Johannes Pong
