Season’s Treatings

Season’s Treatings

December 4th, 2009

Dorothy So
gets into the holiday spirit with the season’s sweetest little treats.

With the holidays just around the corner, everyone’s in the mood for something a little indulgent. So take full advantage of the festive season with the sumptuous selection of yummy holiday goodies the town has to offer.

Michelin Approved
What better way to ring in the festive cheer than with cakes from a two-Michelin starred establishment? L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon’s pâtissier-at-large, chef Tadashi Nakamura has designed two absolutely beautiful, centre-piece-worthy bûche de Noël log-shaped cakes to celebrate Christmas. The first, the bright red “La Rose” is a rose and chocolate cake with delicate hints of fresh raspberry and lychee, topped with a row of chef Nakamura’s petit French macarons. Very kawaii. The other festive offering is the “Chocolat Poire,” which pairs the lovely flavors of seasonal pear with sweet and indulgent caramel chocolate. Both cakes are priced at $320 and are available at Le Salon de Thé de Joël Robuchon. Shop 315, The Landmark, 15 Queen’s Rd., Central, 2166-9000.

Fashionably Festive
Of course, there’s always the ever-chic SEVVA for those who want to really pamper themselves this season. Socialite and restaurant owner Bonnie Gokson glams up Christmas with a unique ALL RED Cake, which is as delish as it is visually stunning. The cake is made with layers of red buttermilk chiffon sponge cake, sandwiching a layer of cherry jello and sweet cream. The whole thing is topped off with festively red cherries and raspberries. $500 for a 500g or $850 for a 1-kilo cake to-go may be a hefty price tag but hey, it’s all in the name of good taste. 25/F, Prince’s Building, 10 Chater Rd., Central, 2537-1388.

Fit For a King
The traditional French festive cake, galette des Rois will be available at The Press Room from January 1-15. Originally made to celebrate the Epiphany festival, which commemorates the first revelation of Jesus Christ to man, this “king cake” is a long-standing part of French tradition. And fit for a king it is too, with buttery, deliciously flakey pastry layers filled with sweet frangipane and almond paste. It is customary to hide a coin in the cake, with whoever finding it in their slice being crowned King or Queen for the day. In the case of The Press Room, this translates to a free meal on the house. And, as an added celebration, The Press Room will also be holding a lucky draw with a number of great prizes for all galette des Rois-eating guests. 108 Hollywood Rd., Sheung Wan, 2525-3444.

Cheesy Christmas
Another offering from the good folks at The Press Room Group is the famous, hot n’ melty Mont d’Or cheese, available at Classified from the second week of December. Dine in and have the Classified crew heat it up in the oven for you (with Calvados apple liqueur or port sherry) so you can savor the cheese in all its ooey, fondue-y amazingness. The wonderful cheese is also available for takeaway to enjoy with family and friends in the cozy comfort of your own home. Classified The Cheese Room: 108 Hollywood Rd., Sheung Wan, 2525-3454; Classified Mozzarella Bar: 31 Wing Fung St., Wan Chai, 2528-3454.

Eat to Give Back
One way to get into the Christmas spirit is to do something nice for the community. And at Posto Pubblico, you can do that while munching away on some truly fantastic food (which is always a bonus). This recently-opened SoHo establishment dishes up New York-Italian food made mainly from clean, locally grown, sustainable ingredients to help reduce the food industry’s carbon footprint. And joining the environmentally and socially conscious team at Posto is award-winning pastry chef, AJ Bellarosa, who’s gathered plenty of food-cred working in the kitchens of New York’s acclaimed L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon and Jean Georges. To celebrate the festive season, chef Bellarosa’s prepared a special dessert—a gorgeous stacked cassata icebox cake. The cake combines the deliciousness of hazelnut, ricotta and chocolate, and is served with a scoop of homemade pistachio ice cream. It’s definitely one of the tastiest ways to give back to community and the environment. 28 Elgin St., Central, 2577-7160.

Mulled Wines
It’s not really Christmas until you’ve had your first mulled wine of the season. Get that warm fuzzy (and maybe a little tipsy) feeling at C Bar with their delicious mulled wine, spiced with cinnamon, cloves, star anise and nutmeg, and with a nice citrus kick. It’s $68 for a glass and we’re told that it comes with a free hug from the bar team—now that’s true Christmas spirit.

For the Scandinavian take on things, visit the one and only FINDS for their glögg mulled wine (right). Like regular mulled wine, FINDS’s glögg is made by seasoning red wine (in this case, with cinnamon, citrus peel, ginger, cardamom and cloves). The one differing factor is that blackcurrant juice is added to the wine to give it an extra sweet, berrylicious flavor. C Bar: Shop A, G/F, 30-32 D’Aguilar St., Central, 2530-3695; FINDS: 2/F, LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham St., Central, 2522-9318.
