Drop

March 27th, 2008

The buzz: After seven years of dirty, dirty dancing, Drop brushes herself up and puts on a brand new face. And it’s a fabulous new look. The nip and tuck was completely worth it.

The décor: Never had a client ever asked Dan Evans, the London designer of the original interior, to redesign a venue that’s still going strong. But still, he worked it over and out. Gone is the white millennium minimalism; in is the rich, opulent candy colors of red, pink and baby blue. The pillar that once stood awkwardly on the dance floor has transformed into a carnivalesque column, while mirrored walls and the opening up of the bar has created a decadent illusion of space – Drop has grown.

The drinks: Remember how they brought us fresh fruit cocktails seven years ago, and then everyone started doing lychee martinis? Well, now they’re fabulizing it up with luxury cocktails. The watermelon cosmo’s the new miss thang, so is the wasabi cocktail with elite vodka and gomme.

The music:
A key ingredient to the triumph of the legendary club, co-owner and DJ Joel Lai still oversees the music, with a fusion of acid jazz, soul and downtempo in the early evening, which progresses to harder house and funky garage in the early morning.

The crowd: Only those who can get past the door bitch dressed in Christian Audigier (who’s designing for Ed Hardy, who does the staff’s uniforms).

Why you’ll come back:
The lowered seats make you feel taller and more glamorous when you sit down. And once more, there’s a hip club for those after hours. I feel seven years younger already.
