Dada
January 2nd, 2009The buzz: Named after the post-WWI surrealist art movement, Dada Bar + Lounge at The Luxe Manor boutique hotel is a new upmarket jazz venue oozing kitschy fun.
The décor: Crazy couches and chairs from all eras and of all shapes sit in the lounge, fantastically celebratory yet reassuringly comforting. There are also three private dining rooms: Heaven (all in white marble, with a cloudlike chandelier), Hell (dark, sexy, with a view of the fires from the private kitchen) and Eden (grassy carpet, with a canopy of flowers and peacock feathers over the dining table).
The music: Quartet ABA and the Company entertains with sensual jazz and soulful R&B Thursday to Saturday from 9pm to 1am. The house band showcases the talent of Mark Peter, an accomplished musical director whose legendary acts have included the Supremes and the Temptations, and drummer Al Gordon, who has performed in some of the world’s best-known jazz clubs for over 40 years.
The drinks: Mixologist Luke Branch blurs the line between cocktails and food, so sample his avant-garde potions, like the Dada (light rum, pomegranate liqueur, blood orange juice, fresh spearmint and lime), Salvador Dali (grilled pineapple chunks, black-pepper-infused vodka, Amaretto di Saronno, essential oils of lemon and lime, and maraschino syrup).
The food: The private rooms serve tailor-made menus from Aspasia, The Luxe Manor’s signature restaurant.
Why you’ll be back: Because you like to keep it surreal.
