April 10th, 20091. Swearing in Legco - The League of Social Democrats (LSD) legislators continue to defy government criticism of them for using profanity in the Legco chamber. After being banned from using the Cantonese swear word “pok guy” (literally: “fall on the street”) by Legco president Tsang Yok-sing, LSD chairman “Mad Dog” Wong Yuk-man instead used similar-sounding words in English and Putonghua in his criticism of Financial Secretary John Tsang. Describing Hong Kong people’s dire economic situation, he repeatedly used the words “poor guy” and the Mandarin “bu gai” (meaning “should not”) while pointing his finger at the government secretaries present. Tsang Yok-sing did not stop Wong during the speech.
2. Henry Tang: Tree Tsar - Following the Coroner’s Court ruling that the death of a 19-year-old girl by a falling tree in Stanley was an avoidable accident, Chief Executive Donald Tsang appointed Chief Secretary Henry Tang head of a new taskforce that will review procedures for maintaining and preserving trees. The group will decide whether there are too many different government departments maintaining trees at the moment, whether there’s adequate training and monitoring of front-line workers in charge of tree maintenance. The review has to be done in three months, Tsang urges. Yep, that's right—tree tsar.
3. Tsang Tak-sing’s Taipei tour - Secretary for Home Affairs and veteran leftist Tsang Tak-sing has just rounded up his four-day historic trip to Taipei. He is the highest-ranking government official to visit Taiwan since the handover. Mr Tsang met with his Taipei counterpart, Cultural Affairs Bureau director Lee Yung-ping, to talk about museum developments, and urged for improvement in the relationship between the two cities. When visiting the famous bookshop Eslite Books, Tsang “bumped into” Taipei mayor Hau Lung-bin. On the same day, in a meeting with visiting Kuomintang vice-chairman Eric Chu Li-luan, Chief Executive Donald Tsang expressed his wish to visit Taipei officially some time during the remainder of his term.
