A highlight of the ongoing celebrations in honor of the Centenerary of the 1911 Revolution, "Dr. Sun Yat-sen" is an opera of three acts that centers on the romance between Dr. Sun and his wife, Soong Ching-ling (of the revered Soong sisters). Conceived by Opera Hong Kong in collaboration with the New York City Opera's VOX program, this original piece is set to premiere in Beijing to wide acclaim. Though sung in Putonghua, there are spoken excerpts in English; the performance also combines elements from both Eastern and Western operas, resulting in a unique a cross-cultural fusion.

Puccini's famous last opera, "Turandot," is known for being full of conundrums. Based in China, it centers on the story of Princess Turandot, who gives her suitors three riddles that they must answer correctly for her hand in marriage. If they fail, they are beheaded. When Prince Calaf gets all three correct, the Princess backs out on her promise. Calaf offers to set her free and take his own life—but only if she can guess his name. How's that for a Chinese puzzle?...
