Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
I only have three pairs of shoes and one of them just broke beyond repair. I’ve only ever bought shoes overseas and I’m a guy, so naturally I don’t have any patience when it comes to shopping. It’s difficult to find shoes because my shoe size is US size 12. Usually my friend searches all over Hong Kong and buys them for me, but she’s not in town at the moment. Can you help me? —Big Feet
I feel for you—I really do. It’s hard to find a good range of sizes in Hong Kong, whatever yours is. I guess passing on your problem to your friend wasn’t very practical or nice of you, was it? If you’re willing to take the time to wander around Ladies’ Market and Sneakers Street (Yau Ma Tei MTR Exit A2) you will eventually be able to find quite a few options in your size. However, if you want more high-end, quality options then your best bet would be to visit Lane Crawford (1/F, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 2118-3668, www.lanecrawford.com) or Seibu (1/F, Langham Place, 8 Argyle St., Mong Kok, 2269-1888). For more affordable choices, D-mop (G/F, Green Field Mansion, 8 Kingston St., Causeway Bay, 2203-4130) sells Keds in US size 12 in a variety of colors and Aldo (1/F, IFC Mall, 8 Finance St., Central, 2623-0733) also has a small selection of shoes that might fit you.
Dear Mr. Know-It-All,
Everyone knows that the cure to a hangover is to keep drinking. Now how do we combine that with our favorite meal of the day—brunch? Where’s the best place in town to go for a champagne brunch? —Alkie
All that alcohol can’t be good for you. You do know there are smarter ways to cure a hangover right? (For tips, see last week’s Retox/Detox story, in issue no. 904) But I assume flouncing around with a glass of champagne in your hand on a Sunday morning would make you feel better anyway. The Pawn (62 Johnston Rd., Wan Chai, 2866-3444, www.thepawn.com.hk) offers British comfort food such as crumpets, pancakes and crispy pork belly with applesauce. It costs $288 for free-flow Delamotte champagne or $128 for unlimited selected wines on top of your meal. If you want an all-you-can-eat as well, go to Whisk (5/F, The Mira Hong Kong, 118 Nathan Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, 2368-1111) for their Sunday brunch, which includes unlimited main courses, a selection of barbeque items, desserts, your chosen style of eggs and some cold appetizers all for $675—with free-flow champagne, cocktails and beer, of course.
